Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, and other sea islands of India:

Andaman and Nicobar Islands:

  • These island groups are the top parts of a submarine mountain range. Due to their proximity to the equator and the humid, hot climate, they are covered with dense forests.
  • The total area of these islands is 8,249 sq km. These island groups can be divided into two parts:
  1. The northern part is called Andaman
  2. The southern part is called Nicobar
  • These island groups are strategically important for the country.
  • The administrative capital is Port Blair.
  • The 10° Channel separates the Andaman Islands from the Nicobar Islands.
  • The southernmost point of Nicobar is called “Indira Point”.

Lakshadweep:

  • Lakshadweep, located off the western coast of India, is made of coral reefs. These islands cover an area of about 32 sq km.
  • The administrative capital is Kavaratti.
  • The 8° Channel separates the Lakshadweep from the Maldives.
  • Pitt Island, an uninhabited island here, is famous for its bird sanctuary.
  • Since 1973, the Lakshadweep, Minicoy, and Amindivi island groups have been collectively called Lakshadweep.

Other Sea Islands:

  • Apart from these two major island groups, India has several smaller islands along the western coast, eastern coast, Ganges delta region, and the Gulf of Mannar area.
  • Many of these islands are uninhabited. These islands are administratively managed by the nearest mainland states.
