Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, and other sea islands of India:
Andaman and Nicobar Islands:
- These island groups are the top parts of a submarine mountain range. Due to their proximity to the equator and the humid, hot climate, they are covered with dense forests.
- The total area of these islands is 8,249 sq km. These island groups can be divided into two parts:
- The northern part is called Andaman
- The southern part is called Nicobar
- These island groups are strategically important for the country.
- The administrative capital is Port Blair.
- The 10° Channel separates the Andaman Islands from the Nicobar Islands.
- The southernmost point of Nicobar is called “Indira Point”.
Lakshadweep:
- Lakshadweep, located off the western coast of India, is made of coral reefs. These islands cover an area of about 32 sq km.
- The administrative capital is Kavaratti.
- The 8° Channel separates the Lakshadweep from the Maldives.
- Pitt Island, an uninhabited island here, is famous for its bird sanctuary.
- Since 1973, the Lakshadweep, Minicoy, and Amindivi island groups have been collectively called Lakshadweep.
Other Sea Islands:
- Apart from these two major island groups, India has several smaller islands along the western coast, eastern coast, Ganges delta region, and the Gulf of Mannar area.
- Many of these islands are uninhabited. These islands are administratively managed by the nearest mainland states.
